Our Work

At the Northeast Iowa Peace & Justice Center we are an issues oriented, non-partisan, non-profit corporation.  We work in areas that require our attention in order to increase civic engagement so that we can improve the quality of life in our communities.

We currently have four active interest groups:

  • Peace Issues
  • Social Justice
  • Environment
  • Immigration

Environmental Justice & Sustainability

The Environmental Justice  and Sustainability Working Group works to  promote the following ideals:

  • Being cognizant of the greater environment and ecosystem in which we live.
  • Our individual actions directly impact our natural resources and environment.
  • Humans have contributed to climate change.  It it crucial that we work together to slow and manage its effects.
  • Encouraging all levels of government, communities, and families to make smart and informed energy policy choices.

Immigration

Immigration Guiding Principles

The NEIPJC Immigration Working Group advocates for national immigration reform that includes the following:

  • Policies and enforcement that treat immigrants, regardless of legal status, with compassion and respect for the family unit.
  • Making the path to acquiring legal residency and citizenship simpler, friendlier, more accessible, and less bureaucratic.
  • A focus on improving and enforcing hiring laws for employers rather than immigration raids, detentions, and deportations.

Social and Economic Justice

The NEIPJC’s Social and Economic Justice Working Group facilitates research, education, and action without a partisan agenda. Some of our activities include:

  • Hosting public events and meetings in response to the concerns of the people of Northeast Iowa and the nation.
  • Promoting healthy and respectful civic discussions between individuals and organizations.

Establishing productive relationships between individuals, communities, and all levels of                                                                                            government.

Peace Issues

The NEIPJC’s War and Peace Working Group works actively to promote peaceful conflict resolution rather than violence, both at the individual relationship level and the governmental level.  Some of our activities include:

Hosting events for activists, authors, and other public figures to spread the message of peace.

Teaching conflict resolution strategies for individuals, families, and organizations.

Encouraging our elected officials to approach conflict peacefully rather than divisively.

Positive peacemaking through monthly Women in Black vigils and the Peaceful Pen society, a monthly letter-to-the-editor writing group.
